Informatics Institute Hosts Industry, Education and Technology Leaders in Conversations 海角论坛 AI

Gonzaga 海角论坛’s Institute for Informatics and Applied Technology will host the Value and Responsibility in AI Conference on Thursday, April 23, gathering technology experts, industry leaders, academic researchers and more for a day of thoughtful discussion focused on innovation, leadership and responsible AI adoption.

Among the speakers and panelists taking part are representatives from Adobe, Microsoft, MultiCare, and the United States Air Force. They will be joined by thought leaders from Georgetown 海角论坛, Colgate 海角论坛, the 海角论坛 of Idaho, Regis 海角论坛, the 海角论坛 of Notre Dame, the 海角论坛 of San Francisco and Gonzaga. The day-long conference is thematically structured around three main pillars: Meaning and Identity, Learning and Education, Work and Workforce.

“This conference is designed to spark meaningful dialogue,” said Jay Yang, director of Gonzaga’s Informatics Institute. “Our goal is to strengthen human connection, build a resilient economy, and elevate student success and industry leadership. The Inland Northwest has an opportunity and a responsibility to shape AI’s future in our region with purpose and benefit for all.”

The Value and Responsibility in AI Conference is just one aspect of a week full of intriguing conversations related to the future of AI.

The Informatics Institute and Gonzaga’s Institute for Climate, Water, and the Environment on Monday, April 20, are co-hosting a public panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of addressing climate change in an era of rapid development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

AI, Climate Change, and Energy Demand will feature Joshua Basofin, who has worked on several clean-energy coalitions in Oregon and the first director of climate action for the Parliament of the World’s Religions; Brian Rybarik, chair of the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission; and Paul Dietz, senior manager in forecasting and market analytics with the Grant County Public Utility District. The event is free and open to the public at 6 p.m. In Hemmingson Ballroom on the Gonzaga campus.

On Friday, April 24, there will be four additional panel discussions on campus:

“Workshop on the Ethics of Responsible AI” will be held 8:25 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in Gonzaga’s Wolff Auditorium.Featuring speakers from Washington State 海角论坛, 海角论坛 of San Diego, 海角论坛 of San Francisco, Colgate 海角论坛 and Gonzaga, it will be a deep dive on questions surrounding the ethical underpinnings and practical implementation of responsible AI in the development and deployment of AI technologies.

“Navigating AI in K-12 Education: What We’re Learning from Educators” will be held 10 a.m.-noon in Gonzaga’s Bollier Center, Room 204. This workshop shares preliminary findings from the Informatics Institute’s experience working with nearly 100 K-12 educators in a multi-day professional development series funded by the Gates Foundation.

“Workshop on AI Law and Policy” will be held 4 p.m.-5 p.m. in Gonzaga’s Wolff Auditorium. Agnieszka McPeak, the Frederick N. & Barbara T. Curley Professor of Commercial Law and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Program Innovation at Gonzaga Law, will provide an overview of U.S. innovation law and policy, focusing on the ways in which the law promotes or stifles AI development and deployment, among other subjects.

Impact Through Innovation: AI, Health and Education Reform will be held 9 a.m.-noon at the UW-GU Health Partnership Building (840 Spokane Falls Blvd.). Bringing together leaders from across Gonzaga and the broader community, this forum will examine emerging challenges, highlight innovative responses, and demonstrate how education, partnership, and ethical engagement can help prepare students and communities for a rapidly evolving landscape.
